The Bluegrass State has the lowest electric rates in the United States.  At last count there were some 34 electric utilities operating in Kentucky, including rural electric co-ops, investor-owned utilities and municipal utilities.  The average residential electricity rate among all those utilities, as of August 2003, was 5.8 cents per kilowatt-hour.  According to the U.S. Energy Department, no other state was below 6 cents per kWh and Kentucky's electric providers charge 50% less than the national average.

The rate story gets even better here in the Lake Cumberland area that is served by South Kentucky Rural Electric Co-Op.  SKRECC has not increased rates in the past 15 years and currently charges only 5.6 centers per kWh.
